Welcome to the June edition of the Diebold Media Tip Sheet

The Diebold Media Tip Sheet was created for media contacts that follow or are interested in news from Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE:DBD). This monthly e-publication is intended to provide information about the latest events and happenings from Diebold’s self-service, security and service operations around the world.

Express Cash Dispensers Reduce On-Hand Cash By Half
To maximize working capital, improve teller accuracy, reduce the amount of cash tellers kept on hand and decrease the amount of time tellers spent retrieving cash from vaults, Public Service Credit Union located in Denver, Colo., looked to Diebold’s 220 Express Cash Dispensers (ECDs).

For more than 20 years, Public Service Credit Union used competitive teller cash dispensers to automate cash handling and improve teller accuracy. However, tellers were still required to keep large quantities of cash on hand, which presented security risks for staff members who conducted frequent vault buys and performed complicated audits.

The ECD solved these issues by allowing the credit union to manage its cash inventory more efficiently and economically. The ECDs improved the speed and accuracy of each transaction, simplified the balancing process and helped minimize the risk of human error. For these reasons, Public Service Credit Union was able to reduce by 50 percent the amount of cash that tellers kept on hand, minimizing any potential loss.

“The ECD performance has been great,” said Ashlee Micale, chief financial officer and senior vice president, Public Service Credit Union. “The service Diebold provides has been excellent and the new ECDs have helped us reduce our operating costs.”

150th anniversary: A Man of Steel Leads a Company of Iron
In 1936 in a Cleveland, Ohio, suburb, a group of local constables stood bewildered outside a notorious, mob-run casino called The Harvard Club. They were armed with a search warrant, looking for several wanted fugitives believed hiding inside. But a steely voice from behind a barred door had called out and warned the police to keep their distance. “Stay where you are. We’ve got machine guns and we’ll mow down anybody who walks through that door.”

A hurried call went out to Cleveland’s safety director pleading for advice. The director responded in person, rushing to the scene with 40 men of his own. He marched before them, through the ranks of the hapless locals, and tramped directly to the saloon’s front door. He banged on it loudly. A face came to the peephole. “Whaddya want?” The director answered calmly. “I’m Eliot Ness. And I’m coming in.” Resistance melted away, the doors opened and the raid went off without incident.

So, who was Eliot Ness? Just the former U.S. Justice Department agent who worked from 1929 to 1932 to help crush the gangland empire of Chicago’s “Scarface” Al Capone, America’s most infamous racketeer. Afterward, Ness became Cleveland’s public safety director (1935 to 1942), during which time he rooted out corruption and inefficiency in the police department, smashed gambling and extortion rings, tamed violent youth gangs, upgraded fire protection and traffic safety, and instituted other reforms. He also served as chairman of the board of directors of Diebold Safe & Lock Co. from June 5, 1944, to April 2, 1951.
