150th anniversary: Diebold vaults protected Kuwaiti currency from Saddam Hussein’s army
This year, Diebold is celebrating its 150th year in business—a milestone few companies achieve. Researching through company history, stories surfaced about parts of American and world history in which Diebold had a significant connection. In the early 1990s, Saddam Hussein’s army attempted to break into Diebold vaults in Kuwait and steal Kuwaiti currency—dinars. But Diebold’s vault doors and locks held tight.
Lamar Newton, retired installation supervisor, Diebold, was sent to Kuwait to open five Diebold vaults and assist in recovering the currency within the vaults. "When I arrived, the entire place was a mess," Newton recalled. "There were sand bag bunkers all over where Saddam Hussein’s army would fire from. Buildings were gutted and burned. It was like a scene on television.”
"Because Hussein stole so much money, the Kuwaiti government was issuing new money,” Newton said. “The new currency had to be printed in a short time and the vaults had to be opened just as quickly – within two-weeks." Diebold Express Cash Recyclers Deliver Big Efficiencies for Republic Bank & Trust
Republic Bank & Trust had a need for more space and more efficient traffic flow within its small branch. Located in Norman, Okla., Republic is regarded as the last true community bank in town. With five full-service banking centers, the bank had received benefits of teller automation for years through Diebold cash dispensers. But tellers were spending countless time completing vault buy-and-sell transactions and counting cash.
The bank knew it had to take its teller automation strategy a step further, and decided to invest in Diebold Express Cash Recyclers (ECRs). These cash recyclers, with a small footprint, automatically count, authenticate and securely safeguard cash deposited by customers. This same cash is later dispensed for customer cash withdrawals.
With the use of these ECRs, the bank experienced more efficient business days. “With the Express Cash Recyclers, we can get customers in and out of the banking center very quickly,” said Staci Pruett, vice president and banking center manager, Republic Bank & Trust. “That’s because our tellers no longer count money at the teller line. Thanks to the Diebold ECRs, we are able to manage more transactions in our limited amount of space. We also provide a better customer experience because tellers can stay in front of the customers.”
